# Appstle vs Seal: Revenue Caps Against Subscriber Caps

Both apps charge 0% on their paid plans, both hold near-perfect listing ratings, and the rating tells a buyer nothing. The axis tells them everything: [Appstle Subscriptions](https://apps.shopify.com/subscriptions-by-appstle) bands on monthly subscription revenue and [Seal Subscriptions](https://apps.shopify.com/seal-subscriptions) bands on subscription count, so the same programme can cost $0 on one and $100 on the other.

Here is the rule, and it holds across the whole grid. **Divide your monthly subscription revenue by your subscriber count. Above roughly $30 per subscriber per month, Seal is cheaper. Below roughly $15 with more than 500 subscribers, Appstle is cheaper.** Forty subscribers paying $400 each run free on Seal and cost $100 a month on Appstle. Twelve hundred subscribers paying $10 each cost $30 on Appstle and $89.95 on Seal. Every figure here was read from the live Shopify App Store listings and from Seal's own pricing page on 8 October 2026.

## Key takeaways

- Appstle's bands are $500, $5,000, $15,000 and $100,000 of monthly subscription revenue, priced at free, $10, $30 and $100. Above $100,000 the ladder stops and routes to sales.
- [Seal](https://apps.shopify.com/seal-subscriptions)'s bands are 50, 100, 250, 500, 2,000, 50,000 and 150,000 subscriptions, priced at free, $5.95, $9.95, $24.95, $89.95, $199 and $399. All seven are published and all seven carry 0%.
- Seal's free plan states "Unlimited revenue, 50 subscriptions". Appstle's free plan caps subscription revenue at $500 a month, which is about 12 subscribers at $40.
- Appstle prints "0% Transaction Fee" on Starter and above. The Free card does not carry that line, so the free tier's fee is undisclosed rather than zero.
- Seal lists full API and webhooks access on every visible tier including the free plan. Appstle's panel points merchants to sales for APIs and webhooks, so programmatic access sits on no published Appstle plan.
- Appstle's listing read 5.0 stars from 8,948 reviews on 8 October 2026 and Seal's read 4.9 from 3,135. Both distributions are clean, so the ratings do not separate these two apps.

## They are not priced on the same thing

Every rating, review count and price below was read from each app's live Shopify App Store listing on 8 October 2026, and each app name links to its listing so you can check it in one click. [Seal](https://apps.shopify.com/seal-subscriptions)'s App Store panel renders the maximum of four cards, so its upper tiers were read from [sealsubscriptions.com/pricing](https://www.sealsubscriptions.com/pricing) the same day.

Both apps build on Shopify's own [selling plans](https://shopify.dev/docs/apps/build/purchase-options/subscriptions/selling-plans) framework, which supplies the subscription contract, the recurring charge and the stored payment method. The subscription mechanic is therefore not what differs. The meter is.

| Appstle plan | Monthly | Band | Seal plan | Monthly | Band |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| FREE | $0 | up to $500/mo revenue | Free for life | $0 | 50 subscriptions |
| STARTER | $10 | up to $5,000/mo revenue | SUPERSALE | $5.95 | 100 subscriptions |
| BUSINESS | $30 | up to $15,000/mo revenue | RISING STAR | $9.95 | 250 subscriptions |
| BUSINESS PREMIUM | $100 | up to $100,000/mo revenue | LEGEND | $24.95 | 500 subscriptions |
| Enterprise | not published | not published | LEADER | $89.95 | 2,000 subscriptions |
| | | | MEGA STAR | $199 | 50,000 subscriptions |
| | | | SUPERSTAR | $399 | 150,000 subscriptions |

Read the two right-hand columns together and the mismatch is obvious. Appstle's most expensive published plan covers $100,000 a month of subscription revenue. Seal's covers 150,000 subscriptions and says nothing about revenue at all, because revenue is not what it counts.

### Worked example 1: a high-AOV brand with 40 subscribers at $400

A coffee-equipment brand sells a $400 monthly curated box. Forty subscribers is $16,000 a month of subscription revenue.

- **Seal:** 40 subscriptions sits inside the free tier, which states "Unlimited revenue, 50 subscriptions". Cost: **$0**.
- **Appstle:** $16,000 clears the $15,000 Business band and lands on Business Premium. Cost: **$100**.

That is $1,200 a year for the same 40 subscription contracts, and the gap exists because the brand's average subscription value is $400. Appstle's meter reads the revenue and charges accordingly; [Seal](https://apps.shopify.com/seal-subscriptions)'s meter reads 40 and charges nothing.

Now hold the subscriber count and raise the price. Four hundred subscribers at $300 each is $120,000 a month. Seal charges $24.95, because 400 is still inside the 500-subscription band. Appstle has no published plan at all, because $120,000 clears Business Premium's $100,000 ceiling and the next step is an unpriced Enterprise conversation. Same subscriber count, and one vendor's price does not move while the other's leaves the price list.

### Worked example 2: a low-ticket brand with 1,200 subscribers at $10

A supplement brand sells a $10 monthly refill. Twelve hundred subscribers is $12,000 a month of subscription revenue, which is **less** than the coffee brand's $16,000.

- **Appstle:** $12,000 sits inside the $15,000 Business band. Cost: **$30**.
- **Seal:** 1,200 subscriptions clears the 500-subscription LEGEND band and lands on LEADER. Cost: **$89.95**.

Three times the price for less revenue, and nothing about the programme is more complex. [Seal](https://apps.shopify.com/seal-subscriptions) is counting 1,200 records; Appstle is counting $12,000.

The slate case sits between the two. Four hundred subscribers at $30 each is $12,000 a month, which costs $30 on Appstle and $24.95 on Seal. At that shape the two apps are within $5 of each other and the pricing axis stops mattering, which is exactly the point: the axis only bites at the extremes of average subscription value.

### The decision rule in one line

Average monthly subscription value is subscription revenue divided by subscriber count. Price both apps against that one number:

- **Above about $30 per subscriber per month:** [Seal](https://apps.shopify.com/seal-subscriptions)'s count bands are more generous on every row. A brand at $100 per subscriber per month pays Seal $24.95 at 500 subscribers while Appstle is already past $100,000 of revenue and off the published ladder.
- **Below about $15 per subscriber per month with more than 500 subscribers:** Appstle's revenue bands are cheaper, and the advantage widens as the subscriber count rises. At 5,000 subscribers paying $15, Appstle charges $100 and Seal charges $199.
- **Between $15 and $30:** the two land within a few dollars at most volumes. Decide on features, support and trial length instead.

## 1. Appstle Subscriptions — metered on revenue, and the API is sales-gated

**Best for:** low-ticket, high-count replenishment programmes. Appstle charges on subscription revenue, so a supplement, coffee or consumables brand with thousands of cheap recurring orders pays for the revenue rather than for the records: 5,000 subscribers at $15 each is $75,000 a month and costs $100, where a count-metered app charges $199. The bands also mean a programme that doubles its subscriber count at the same AOV only moves one tier, not three.

**Not ideal for:** high-AOV subscription boxes and anything needing an API. A brand selling a $400 box clears the $15,000 band at 38 subscribers, so Appstle's $100 tier arrives while the programme is still tiny. And the Business Premium card itself points merchants to sales for Enterprise, APIs and webhooks, which means headless storefronts and custom portals have no published price at all. If your build needs programmatic subscription access, Appstle's cost to you is unknown until a call.

Appstle Subscriptions runs on 32,512 live Shopify stores. Its listing read 5.0 stars from 8,948 reviews on 8 October 2026, with 41 one-star reviews, and it carries the Built for Shopify badge.

**What it actually does**

- Pay-as-you-go and prepaid subscriptions, build-a-box, bundling and action logs, with build-a-box arriving on the $30 Business tier.
- Retention tools and cancellation control from $30, the cheapest published cancel-flow tooling in the subscription category.
- Hands-on migration and app integrations named on the Free card, which is unusual: most vendors gate migration support behind a paid tier.
- Product swap, automatic price and address sync, checkout links, order unification and a custom email domain from $100.
- "24/7 Human Support in Minutes" printed on every card, free plan included.

**What to check before you commit**

Model the band you will be in at the end of the quarter, not the one you are in today. Appstle's bands jump 3x, 5x and 6.7x in sequence ($500, $5,000, $15,000, $100,000), so a brand crossing $15,000 of monthly subscription revenue triples its bill from $30 to $100 on the same subscriber base. That is not a penalty, but it is a step you want on the forecast rather than on the invoice.

Then check the free plan's two gaps. The $500 monthly revenue ceiling is roughly 12 subscribers at $40, so the free tier is a trial. And the "0% Transaction Fee & No Hidden Charges" line is printed on Starter, Business and Business Premium but not on Free, so the free tier's transaction fee is undisclosed. Budget from the $10 Starter plan.

The trial is 14 days, which is one billing cycle on a monthly subscription. If you need to watch a second renewal before deciding, that is not long enough.

## 2. Seal Subscriptions — metered on count, and the whole ladder is published

**Best for:** high-AOV subscription programmes and any brand that wants to price its own growth without a sales call. [Seal](https://apps.shopify.com/seal-subscriptions) counts subscriptions and never charges a percentage, so a brand with 300 subscribers at $200 each runs $60,000 a month of subscription revenue for $24.95. The published ladder runs to 150,000 subscriptions at $399, which means a brand can read its cost at ten times its current size in one click rather than in a procurement cycle.

**Not ideal for:** low-ticket programmes with large subscriber books, and brands with a lot of inactive records. Seal counts total subscriptions rather than paying subscribers, so a paused plan or a dormant trial cohort consumes a slot in the band. A brand that recruits 600 subscribers at $8 each pays $89.95 for $4,800 of monthly subscription revenue, where a revenue-metered app charges $10.

_Seal Subscriptions App's listing, read 8 October 2026: 4.9 from 3,135 reviews; SUPERSALE at $5.95/month, 0% transaction fee._

Seal Subscriptions runs on 34,158 live Shopify stores. Its listing read 4.9 stars from 3,135 reviews on 8 October 2026, with 17 one-star reviews, and it carries the Built for Shopify badge.

**What it actually does**

- Prints "0% transaction fee" on every published card, free tier included, and states on its own pricing page that "we don't charge any transaction fees".
- Lists full API and webhooks access on all four visible tiers, free plan included. No competitor in this category publishes API access on a free plan.
- Auto-charging mode plus recurring invoices on the free tier, so a brand can run either automatic renewals or manual invoicing without upgrading.
- Tiered subscription discounts, product swaps and automatic delivery-cost recalculation on the free tier.
- A payment calendar, delivery profiles, a custom cancellation flow and the Quick Checkout Wizard from $9.95, and retention and cancellation insight on the $24.95 LEGEND plan.
- A 30-day free trial, which covers a full monthly renewal cycle with room to spare.

**What to check before you commit**

Ask Seal's support exactly what counts toward the subscription cap: active contracts only, or paused and cancelled records too. The band boundaries are 50, 100, 250 and 500, and the step from 500 to 2,000 is a 3.6x price increase from $24.95 to $89.95. If dormant records count, a brand near a boundary pays for history rather than for revenue.

Note also that the App Store panel renders four cards and stops at LEGEND. The $89.95, $199 and $399 tiers, the dedicated success manager on $199 and the "robust API and webhooks" line on the same tier are published only on sealsubscriptions.com, so a brand above 500 subscriptions cannot price Seal from the listing alone.

## Which one to pick

Work the one number first. Divide monthly subscription revenue by subscriber count, and let that decide:

**Take Seal** if your average subscription value is above $30 a month, if you want API access without a sales conversation, or if you want to read your own price at ten times your current scale. [Seal](https://apps.shopify.com/seal-subscriptions) is also the right answer for any brand under 50 subscriptions, because the free tier carries 0%, unlimited revenue and full API access.

**Take Appstle** if your average subscription value is under $15 a month and your subscriber count is in the thousands, or if build-a-box and cancellation control at $30 are the features you are buying. Appstle's hands-on migration on the free plan also matters if you are moving off another platform without engineering time to spare.

**Take neither on price alone** between $15 and $30 of average subscription value. At that shape the two apps differ by a few dollars a month, and trial length, support model and API access are the real variables. Seal's 30-day trial and published ladder favour a self-serve team; Appstle's migration support and 24/7 support line favour a team that wants a human.

If the subscription is part of a wider retention programme, [how loyalty points behave on bundles and subscriptions](https://joy.so/blog/loyalty-points-on-bundles-and-subscriptions/) covers the mechanics that trip brands up, and [Appstle's own loyalty app reviewed](https://joy.so/blog/appstle-loyalty-review/) covers the vendor's second product.

## Price the meter, not the plan

Two apps, two near-perfect ratings, 0% on both, and a cost difference that reaches three times in either direction depending on one number you already have in your Shopify admin. Pull your subscription revenue and your subscriber count, divide, and the answer stops being a judgement call. Then check the ladder above your current band, because the tier you will be in next quarter is the one you are actually buying.

## Frequently asked questions

**Does Appstle or Seal charge a transaction fee?** Neither charges a transaction fee on its paid plans. [Seal](https://apps.shopify.com/seal-subscriptions) prints "0% transaction fee" on all seven published tiers including the free plan. Appstle prints it on Starter, Business and Business Premium but not on the Free card, so the free tier's fee is undisclosed.

**Which is cheaper, Appstle or Seal?** Your average subscription value decides it, and the pivot sits around $30 per subscriber per month. At $400 per subscriber, Seal runs free at 40 subscribers while Appstle charges $100. At $10 per subscriber, Appstle charges $30 at 1,200 subscribers while Seal charges $89.95.

**What is Appstle's free plan limit?** Up to $500 a month in subscription revenue, which is roughly 12 subscribers at $40 each. It includes pay-as-you-go and prepaid subscriptions, hands-on migration and the native customer portal.

**What is Seal's free plan limit?** Fifty subscriptions, with the card stating "Unlimited revenue, 50 subscriptions". It carries 0% transaction fee, full API and webhooks access, auto-charging mode, product swaps and tiered subscription discounts.

**Do either of them give API access on a cheap plan?** Seal does. Full API and webhooks access is listed on all four visible tiers including the free plan. Appstle's Business Premium card points merchants to sales for Enterprise, APIs and webhooks, so no published Appstle plan carries API access.

**How far do their published ladders go?** Seal publishes to $399 a month for 150,000 subscriptions on its own pricing page. Appstle's published ladder stops at $100 a month for $100,000 of monthly subscription revenue, and anything above that is an unpriced Enterprise conversation.
