# Shopify Scripts Deprecation: The First BFCM Without Them

Three of Shopify's own documentation pages still describe Scripts as if they run. The page on combining discounts lists script discounts among the ones that always apply. The page on automatic discounts explains that they are calculated after scripts. The page on discounting across currencies recommends writing one. All three were read on 13 October 2026, fifteen weeks after the last script executed.

That is not a complaint about Shopify's writers. It is what documentation does: it describes the system as it was on the day somebody last revised it. Hold that thought, because there is a document in your own business with the same problem.

**Key Takeaways**

- Shopify Scripts stopped executing on 30 June 2026. Editing and publishing had already ended on 15 April.
- A script that ran all year failed in July and was probably noticed. A script that was published only for last November's sale has had no occasion to fail yet.
- For a loyalty program, scripts typically did three jobs: tier pricing by customer tag, tier free shipping, and rejecting discount codes during a sale.
- Script discounts applied whatever the combination settings said. Their replacements are ordinary discounts that obey those settings, so a VIP price and a sitewide sale no longer stack unless you make them.
- Points earning, multipliers and reward codes never ran on Scripts. If you were never on Shopify Plus, you never had Scripts and nothing here applies.

**Published 26 October 2026.** Written for stores on Shopify Plus. Platform behaviour was read from Shopify's, Yotpo's and Joy's own documentation on 13 October 2026 and is linked. Shopify's guide to moving from Scripts to Functions was not readable on that day and is not quoted.

## What ended, and when

Shopify announced the schedule on 9 April 2026 in [its developer changelog entry on the Shopify Scripts deprecation](https://shopify.dev/changelog/shopify-scripts-will-be-deprecated-on-june-30-2026): "**April 15, 2026—Editing and publishing new Shopify Scripts will no longer be possible**" and "**June 30, 2026—All Shopify Scripts will cease to execute entirely**".

[Shopify's merchant-facing page on Scripts and the Script Editor app](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/checkout-settings/script-editor) now carries the result: "**As of June 30, 2026, Shopify Scripts has been deprecated. Any Scripts that were still published on your store have been deactivated and no longer work**". The replacement is Shopify Functions, either written for the store or delivered inside a public app.

_Three dates from Shopify, and the one that tests them._

## Why this surfaces in November

A script that ran every day stopped on 1 July, and somebody saw it: wholesale customers paying retail, a shipping rate that had been hidden showing up again. Those were fixed in the summer because they had to be.

The scripts at risk now are the ones that were only ever published for a promotion. A tiered sale, a gift with purchase above a threshold, a rule that refused codes on doorbuster items: written for one week, published on the Thursday, unpublished the following Tuesday. Nothing has happened since to show that it is gone.

None of that was the merchant's timetable. Shopify chose the dates, and the window to publish anything new closed in April, seven months before the week those scripts existed for.

## Three jobs a script did for a loyalty program

Shopify's own list of what Scripts were for, in [its guide to the Script Editor app](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/checkout-settings/script-editor), includes discounting products, running promotions with tiered logic, and modifying shipping options and prices. On a store with a loyalty program those capabilities usually ended up doing three specific things.

### Tier pricing by customer tag

A script was able to read the tags on the signed-in customer and act on them. Where a loyalty app wrote the tier as a tag, the script turned the tag into a price. The native replacement arrived before the deadline: since 6 August 2025 an automatic discount can be limited to customer segments, as announced in [Shopify's changelog entry on customer eligibility](https://changelog.shopify.com/posts/customer-eligibility-for-automatic-discounts), and loyalty apps offer [tier perks that create the discount themselves](https://joy.so/membership-program/). [Joy's guide to tier privileges](https://help.joy.so/membership/vip-tiers/tier-privileges/) notes that each discount privilege on a tier "creates its own automatic discount in Shopify".

### Free shipping for a tier

[Yotpo's instructions for tier free shipping on Shopify Plus](https://support.yotpo.com/docs/implementing-free-shipping-for-vip-tiers-on-shopify-plus) are a worked example of the old method. As read on 13 October 2026 they still tell the merchant to install the Script Editor app and paste in a shipping script that checks the customer for a tag beginning **swell_tier\_**. A perk built that way last November is not running. Its replacement is a free shipping discount limited to a segment, and only one shipping discount applies to an order.

### Refusing codes during a sale

This is the job that is hardest to see. Shopify's troubleshooting for discount codes, in [its guide to combining discounts](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/discounts/discount-combinations), still says: "**If you use Shopify Scripts, then a script might be rejecting the discount code**". A script written that way kept reward codes and welcome codes off sale items. With the script gone, nothing is refusing anything, and whether a member's reward code lands on a doorbuster is decided by combination settings alone.

| The job | Last November, with a script | This November |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Tier price by customer tag | A line item script lowered the price | An automatic discount limited to a segment, or a tier perk from your loyalty app |
| Free shipping for a tier | A shipping script zeroed the rate | A free shipping discount limited to a segment |
| Blocking codes during a sale | A script rejected the code | The combination settings on each discount |
| Stacking with other discounts | Always applied, regardless of settings | Applies only where the combination classes allow |

## The stacking rule changed underneath you

Of the four rows in that table the last one matters most, and it is the one the stale documentation gives away. [Shopify's page on combining discounts](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/discounts/discount-combinations) lists the discount types that "always apply to an order, regardless of any combination settings for other discounts on the same order", and the list still includes "**Discounts added to an order using the Scripts API**".

So a VIP price delivered by a script stacked with everything, because it was outside the rules. [Shopify's guide to automatic discounts](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/discounts/discount-methods/automatic-discounts) describes the arithmetic: "automatic discounts run after scripts and use the updated line item prices from the scripts". On a $100 item, a 10% tier script made it $90 and a 30% sitewide sale then made it $63.

![Bar chart comparing what a VIP paid for a $100 item with a script last year and with two discounts that do not combine this year](https://cdn-web.joy.so/cdn/image/2026/10/fig-row33-stack-a19123.webp)

_The same customer and the same two offers, one year apart._

Rebuild the tier price as an automatic discount and it becomes a discount like any other, with a class and a combination setting. If the two cannot combine on your store, the customer receives the better one, the 30%, and pays $70. Your best customers are quoted a worse price than they were a year ago, during the one weekend they are most likely to notice.

Whether they can combine depends on the classes involved and on Shopify's eligibility rules for the store. It also has a ceiling: Shopify allows 25 active automatic discounts, app-created ones included, and every tier perk that used to be one script is now one or more of them.

## What did not change

Points were never calculated by a script. Multipliers, earning rules, redemption and reward codes all belong to the loyalty app and to Shopify's ordinary discount system, and they work as they did. Some newer features were built on the replacement from the start: [Joy's tier-restricted products run on Shopify Functions](https://help.joy.so/membership/vip-tiers/tier-privileges/exclusive-products-for-vips/).

If your store has never been on Plus, you can stop here. Scripts were "available only on the Shopify Plus plan", as [Shopify's page on discounts for international pricing](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/international/pricing/discounts) notes, so there was nothing of yours to switch off. The same goes for a Plus store that migrated in the spring and has already run its tier prices against a sale.

## The audit

- Find last year's BFCM launch checklist and list every step that published, edited or relied on a script.
- For each one, write down what provides that behaviour now: a Function in a named app, a native discount, or nothing. Shopify points merchants to its Scripts customizations report for the same purpose.
- Build this year's sale as a draft and test it with a customer in your top tier. Compare the price with what that customer paid last year.
- [Add a reward code to the same cart](https://joy.so/blog/set-up-your-bfcm-loyalty-in-15-minutes/), with a sale item in it, and see whether it is accepted.
- Count your active automatic discounts against the limit of 25.

The first step is the one that finds the problem, and the third is the one that prices it. The wider sequence for the weeks before the weekend is in our [Black Friday checklist](https://joy.so/blog/black-friday-checklist/) and the [Shopify BFCM guide](https://joy.so/blog/shopify-bfcm-guide/); what a top tier should be worth is covered in the [VIP loyalty program guide](https://joy.so/blog/vip-loyalty-program/).

## Your runbook is the fourth page

Shopify has three pages describing something that stopped in June. Last November's launch checklist is a fourth, and it is the only one you are going to follow step by step. Open it and search for the word script.

## FAQs

### When were Shopify Scripts deprecated?

[Shopify's deprecation notice in its developer changelog](https://shopify.dev/changelog/shopify-scripts-will-be-deprecated-on-june-30-2026) set two dates: editing and publishing ended on 15 April 2026, and all Scripts ceased to execute on 30 June 2026.

### Do Shopify Scripts still run for stores that did nothing?

No. [Shopify's documentation for the Script Editor app](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/checkout-settings/script-editor) states that any Scripts still published "have been deactivated and no longer work".

### What replaces a script that discounted by customer tag?

Shopify's native route is an automatic discount limited to a customer segment, which has been available since 6 August 2025, as [Shopify's changelog post on automatic discount eligibility](https://changelog.shopify.com/posts/customer-eligibility-for-automatic-discounts) records. Loyalty apps also provide tier perks that create the discount for you.

### Will a rebuilt VIP discount stack with my BFCM sale?

Only if both discounts are set to combine and your store is allowed that pairing. A script discount ignored combination settings; its replacement does not. Run the cart before the weekend.

### Does this affect loyalty points or reward codes?

No. Points are calculated by the loyalty app from the order, and reward codes are ordinary Shopify discount codes. What can change is whether a reward code is still blocked from stacking, if a script used to do the blocking.

### Does this affect stores that are not on Shopify Plus?

No. Scripts were available only on the Shopify Plus plan, as [Shopify's international pricing documentation](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/international/pricing/discounts) states.
