# Not every customer is a loyalty member. Now you can tell the difference.

## Why this matters

Know which customers have acted on your loyalty program. [Auto-tagging](https://help.joy.so/settings/additional-features/auto-tag-engaged-members) adds a Shopify customer tag when someone joins or signs in through a loyalty touchpoint, so you can segment engaged members and message them directly.

### Tag members when they engage

When a customer taps **Join program**, **Sign up**, or **Sign in**, Joy adds a tag to their Shopify customer profile. This covers the widget, loyalty page, product page, cart drawer, checkout, and thank you page.

### Segment engaged members in Klaviyo

Once in Shopify, the tag syncs to Klaviyo through your standard integration. Segment on it to send loyalty campaigns to customers who engaged with the program, and suppress those customers from your general broadcast.

### Start automations from the tag

A welcome flow can start as soon as the tag appears. The same tag works as a condition in any automation meant for program participants only.

> Create a Klaviyo segment where Shopify Tag equals your tag, for example **Joy loyalty member**. Send your next loyalty campaign to that segment.

## How to access and use

### Step 1: Open the auto-tag card

In Joy, go to **Settings → Additional features → Auto-tag customers**.

### Step 2: Turn on engagement tagging

Switch on the toggle for **Engaged members**.

### Step 3: Enter your tag name

Type a tag name, such as **Joy loyalty member**, and press **Enter**. Add more tags if you need them.

### Step 4: Save your settings

Click **Save**. Joy starts tagging from that moment forward.

## Good to know

Available on all Joy plans. Engagement tagging is not retroactive: it applies from the moment you turn it on.

## Frequently asked questions

### Can I use the engagement tag in Shopify Flow?

Yes. Joy writes native Shopify customer tags, so the tag works as a condition in Shopify Flow and as a filter in Shopify Analytics and your customers list.

### Can Joy also tag loyalty members and reward redeemers?

Yes. The same card offers **Member / Non-member** and **Active redeemer** tagging, each with its own toggle and tag names.

### Can I tag customers who engaged before I turned it on?

No. Engagement is a live click event, so it has no **Re-sync**. To tag existing customers, turn on member or redeemer tagging and click **Re-sync**.
