# Reward the SMS Opt-In — and the Phone Number That Makes It Possible

A shopper opens your loyalty widget, goes into Profile, and finds the SMS marketing toggle greyed out. They wanted to subscribe. They tapped the thing that subscribes them. Nothing happened.

Hold onto that greyed-out toggle — it explains the second half of this release.

Joy now has a **Subscribe to SMS marketing** earning program. It pays a customer points, once for life, the first time they opt in to SMS marketing consent. It is the SMS counterpart to the Sign up newsletters program that has been running for years — same shape, different channel, and the same reason for existing: an owned channel is worth exactly what your consent rate makes it.

---

## The phone number is the step before the opt-in

Here is the greyed-out toggle again. SMS consent needs a mobile number, so a shopper with no number on file cannot subscribe no matter how much they want to. The toggle stays disabled with a note telling them to add one first.

That is a conversion step hiding inside a settings screen, and most programs pay nothing for it. So the SMS program carries a second, separate reward you can switch on: **Add phone number reward**, paid the first time a customer saves a phone number in the widget Profile. It has its own points value and its own one-time tracking.

The two rewards are independent. A customer who adds a number and then subscribes gets both, once each. A customer who adds a number and never subscribes still gets paid for the number — they do not need to opt in to earn that one.

One limit worth naming before you switch it on: the bonus is forward-only, and it only counts numbers saved through the widget. If you have been collecting numbers at checkout for years, those customers already have a number on file and this bonus pays them nothing. Numbers arriving from checkout, the Shopify admin, a CSV import or another app do not count either. For a store with a mature phone list, that is most of the list.

## Points follow confirmed consent, not the button press

The earn card has a **Subscribe** action on it, so a customer can opt in without going hunting through Profile settings. But the button does not award anything. It asks Shopify to record the consent, and the points are issued later, when Shopify's marketing-consent webhook confirms the subscription actually took effect.

That gap is deliberate. Whether a subscription lands is not entirely your decision — a number can be malformed, a carrier region can reject it, a sync can fail quietly. Paying on the click would credit customers for subscriptions that never existed, and your list would read healthier than it is. Paying on the confirmation means the points and the list agree.

The same discipline applies to the phone bonus. Joy compares the before and after in E.164 form, so reformatting the same number a different way does not read as a new one, and changing an existing number to a different number does not pay a second time.

Consent itself writes straight through to the customer's Shopify marketing consent, so Klaviyo, Postscript or whatever actually sends your messages reads the same state you rewarded on. Joy records the consent; your provider sends the SMS.

## How to set it up

**Step 1 — Add the program.** Reward programs → Earning programs → Add rule → Subscribe to SMS marketing. Name it, set the run dates, and set the points for the opt-in. [Full guide](https://help.joy.so/reward-programs/earning-programs/subscribe-to-sms-marketing).

**Step 2 — Switch on the phone number reward.** Same screen. Toggle *Add phone number reward* and give it its own points value.

**Step 3 — Check the widget is showing the toggle.** The consent switch and the phone field live in the Unified Widget Profile, under Sections → Profile → Settings. If the SMS consent option is switched off there, customers have nowhere to opt in from.

**Step 4 — Save, then Turn on.**

*Subscribe to SMS marketing is available on all Joy plans.*

## An SMS list is a retention asset you rent until you own the consent

The channels you own are the ones that keep working when acquisition costs move against you. SMS lands on the device, rather than in a feed you rent access to.

The constraint has never been the channel. It has been getting permission at a moment when the customer has a reason to say yes. A loyalty widget is that moment: the customer is already there and already counting points. Attaching a reward to the opt-in turns a compliance checkbox into an earning action, and the number you collect on the way there is worth something on its own.

**Every point you pay for consent buys a channel you own outright — one that keeps delivering Assisted Orders long after the points are spent.**

Open your Shopify customer list and filter by SMS subscribers. That count is what this program exists to move.
