Free Shipping Rewards: The One Loyalty Reward Every Shopify Store Can Stack

Every Shopify store can stack a free shipping reward on a sale. Three published rules decide whether yours actually will.

Shopify's checkout has a message you will only see by causing it: "You already have a better combination." It is shown to a customer whose shipping discount has just been turned away, and in late November the customer seeing it is often a loyalty member holding a reward she spent points on.

That is a strange outcome for free shipping in particular, because it is the one reward Shopify allows every store to stack on a sale. Three rules sit between being allowed to and actually doing it, and all three are published.

Key Takeaways

  • Shopify lets every merchant combine a free shipping discount with an order discount or a product discount. Combining two order discounts, which is the usual sale-plus-reward cart, is open to eligible stores only.
  • Being allowed to combine is not the same as combining. Both discounts have to permit it, and a change to the setting does not reach reward codes a member has already redeemed.
  • A minimum purchase amount is counted at the discounted price. With a 40% sale running alongside it, a $75 minimum needs $125 of goods at list price.
  • One shipping discount applies per order. If your BFCM offer already ships free for everyone, a free shipping reward gives a member nothing that weekend.
  • The cost of this reward is a carrier's rate, which you do not set. Shopify and the loyalty apps each offer a cap, and it is worth using.

Published 20 October 2026. Platform rules were read from Shopify's, Joy's, Smile's and Yotpo's own documentation on 13 October 2026 and are linked. The Salesforce figure is a prediction made before the season.

Why free shipping is the exception

In its guide to combining discounts, Shopify recognises six kinds of discount combination and opens three of them to everyone: "order discounts with free shipping discounts", "product discounts with free shipping discounts", and product discounts with other product discounts on separate items. The pairing a BFCM cart usually needs, a sitewide order discount with a money-off reward code on top, is an order discount with another order discount, and that one is reserved for stores that meet Shopify's eligibility requirements.

So a store that cannot let a $10 reward ride on a 30% sale can still let a free shipping reward ride on it. For a member, the difference between those two rewards on a $60 basket is small. For the merchant, one of them works at checkout and the other does not.

Rule one: both discounts have to say yes

Permission from Shopify is where it starts. "Multiple discounts are applied to an order only when the setting on each discount allows the combination", and the FAQ on Shopify's own page about discount combinations answers the obvious question directly: discounts do not combine automatically.

On the loyalty side the box is in the reward's settings. Joy's guide to its free shipping program lists a Discount combinations option for whether the reward can be combined with order discounts or product discounts. The sale discount needs the matching box ticked for shipping discounts, and that one lives in your Shopify admin.

When either box is unticked, Shopify does not split the difference. As its documentation on discount combinations puts it, "Product and order discounts take priority over shipping discounts when they can't be combined", so the sale stays and the member gets the message this page opened with.

There is a timing trap inside this rule. Joy's page on the discount combination setting asks whether changing it affects a discount that was already redeemed and answers: "No, it will not. It can only be applied to the newly redeemed discount after the setting change". A member who redeemed in October is carrying October's setting into November.

Rule two: the minimum is counted after the sale

Most free shipping rewards carry a minimum basket, and Shopify's guide to free shipping discounts is specific about how it is measured: "Products are counted towards a minimum purchase amount at their discounted price". If another discount has already lowered a product's price, the lower price is what counts, and this applies when the two discounts combine.

Put a sale next to a $75 minimum and the member has to fill a larger basket than the reward's wording suggests.

No sale running$75.00$75.00
20% off$93.75$75.00
30% off$107.14$75.00
40% off$125.00$75.00
50% off$150.00$75.00

The same $75 minimum, at five sale depths.

Whether that is a problem depends on what the minimum is for. If it exists to protect you from shipping a $12 order for nothing, counting the discounted price is the behaviour you want. If the reward was sold to members as "free shipping over $75", some of them will reach checkout with $80 of goods in the cart and no free shipping.

Two smaller details from the same Shopify page on free shipping discounts. Taxes are never part of the minimum. And gift cards and store credit used as payment "don't affect the minimum purchase amount", because they are applied after discounts are calculated.

Smile does not give you this lever. Its guide to configuring free shipping rewards lists what the reward cannot do, and requiring a minimum purchase amount is on the list, along with being restricted to particular shipping rates or to a collection.

Rule three: one shipping discount per order

This is the rule that decides whether the reward belongs in your BFCM plan at all. Shopify allows a customer "a maximum of 5 product or order discount codes and 1 shipping discount code on the same order", and its manual page on combining discounts explains that shipping discounts cannot be combined with each other because each one applies to the entire shipping rate.

If your weekend offer includes free shipping for everyone above a threshold, every member whose basket clears it already ships free. A free shipping reward redeemed for that order buys her nothing, and she paid points for it.

What happens to those points is the app's decision. Smile's documentation on how customers redeem points says that when a code goes unused the redeemed points "aren't automatically returned to their balance". Joy lets a merchant convert an unused coupon back into points on request, as its free shipping program guide notes, and a separate Joy article on self-revoking coupons documents a setting that lets customers revoke an unused coupon themselves and get the points back at once.

What it costs, and who sets the price

A money-off reward costs you a number you chose. A free shipping reward costs whatever the carrier charges for that parcel to that address, and the carrier's rate card is not yours to edit.

Salesforce expects that bill to grow this season. Its 2026 holiday predictions say "Retailers will spend an additional $3 billion globally to subsidize free shipping this holiday season as geopolitical factors increase logistics costs", which it puts at a 7% increase on 2025. That is a forecast published ahead of the season. It is also the reason a cap matters more this year than last.

Each layer offers one. Shopify's free shipping discount has an option to exclude shipping rates over a certain amount. Smile lets Shopify merchants set a maximum shipping amount the reward will cover. Joy's tier-level free shipping takes a minimum and a maximum purchase amount, the maximum being for stores that already ship large orders free, according to Joy's tier privileges guide.

A reward or a perk, and one version that stopped working in June

Free shipping reaches a member in two shapes. As a reward it is a code she redeems with points; Joy offers it that way on its Essential plan and above, per its documentation on the free shipping program. As a tier perk it is an automatic discount that applies while she holds the tier, which Joy provides on Advanced and Ultimate, as its page on tier privileges shows, and which Smile documents through a Shopify customer segment in its guide to ongoing VIP discounts.

There was a third shape on Shopify Plus, and it is worth checking whether you are still relying on it. Yotpo's page for tier free shipping on Plus, as read on 13 October 2026, still begins by telling merchants to download the Script Editor app and paste in a shipping script. Shopify's own page on Scripts and the Script Editor app states: "As of June 30, 2026, Shopify Scripts has been deprecated. Any Scripts that were still published on your store have been deactivated and no longer work". A tier perk built on that method last November is not running this one.

When to leave it out of the weekend

If Black Friday already ships free for everyone, do not promote the free shipping reward that week. It will be redundant on most member orders, and a member who spends points on something she would have received anyway has a fair complaint. Bring it back in December, when the sitewide offer has ended and delivery cost is a reason to hesitate again.

Test it on the cart you will actually run

  • Redeem a free shipping reward on a test account today, before you change any setting.
  • Create your BFCM sale discount as you plan to run it and add both to a cart. Note which message checkout shows.
  • Tick the combination boxes on both, redeem a second reward, and repeat. The first code is your October members; the second is everyone after.
  • Fill the cart to just above the reward's minimum at sale prices, then just below it, and confirm where free shipping appears.
  • If the sale includes sitewide free shipping, check what the reward adds. Expect the answer to be nothing.

The wider order of work for the weeks before the weekend is in our Black Friday checklist, and the other loyalty mechanics that hold up on a discounted cart are in the BFCM loyalty strategies guide.

Read the message

The first step on that list is the one to do this week, because it tells you what the members who have already redeemed are going to see. Add the test code to a cart with your sale discount on it and read which sentence Shopify shows you.

FAQs

Can a free shipping reward be used on top of a Black Friday discount?

On any store, yes, provided both discounts are set to combine. Shopify lists order discounts with free shipping discounts, and product discounts with free shipping discounts, among the combinations all merchants can use.

Why did the free shipping code get rejected at checkout?

Most often because the sale discount and the shipping code were not both set to combine. In that case Shopify keeps the product or order discount and the customer sees a message such as "You already have a better combination", the example in Shopify's troubleshooting notes on combining discounts.

Does a gift card payment count toward the free shipping minimum?

It does not change it either way. Shopify's documentation on free shipping discounts says product prices count toward the minimum, at their discounted price, and gift cards or store credit used as payment "don't affect the minimum purchase amount". A gift card the customer is buying does count.

Can two free shipping discounts apply to one order?

No. A customer can use one shipping discount code per order, and only one shipping discount applies. A member's free shipping reward and a sitewide free shipping offer do not add up to anything more than free shipping.

Should free shipping be a tier perk or a points reward?

A perk if you want it to work without the member doing anything, and a points reward if you want it to cost them something and to be a reason to sign in. The perk is an automatic discount and counts toward Shopify's limit on those; the reward is a code and uses the one shipping code a customer is allowed.

What happens to the points if a member redeems and cannot use the code?

It depends on the app. Smile's article on redeeming points states that redeemed points "aren't automatically returned" when a code goes unused. Joy lets a merchant convert an unused coupon back into points, and has a setting that lets customers revoke an unused coupon themselves, explained in Joy's guide to self-revoking coupons.
