Summarize this post with AI

Appstle Loyalty is the cheapest place on Shopify to get VIP tiers. It runs on 27,390 stores and holds 5.0 stars from 1,418 reviews, and tiers sit on its $30 Business plan. The same feature costs $199 a month at Smile.io and $129 at Joy. The catch is not the price — it is that the plan ladder is capped by order volume with no published path above 5,000 orders, and API, webhook and Hydrogen access appear on no plan at all.

Key takeaways

  • Appstle Loyalty runs on 27,390 Shopify stores with 5.0 stars from 1,418 reviews, read on the live listing on 7 October 2026.
  • VIP tiers cost $30 a month here, against $199 at Smile.io and $129 at Joy. That is the single largest price gap on one feature in the loyalty category.
  • The free plan is a working programme, not a trial: points, earning and reward rules, a loyalty page, store credit, referrals, milestone emails, analytics and data export, capped at 250 monthly orders.
  • Shopify POS earning and redemption sits on the $10 Starter plan, which is the cheapest in-store loyalty on the App Store.
  • Plans cap at 250, 500, 2,000 and 5,000 monthly orders. Above 5,000 the listing says to contact the vendor. So does the listing for APIs, webhooks and Hydrogen.
  • Overage on the top published plan is $0.015 per order — roughly 13 times cheaper than Smile.io's $0.20 and 7 times cheaper than Joy's $0.10.

Who Appstle Loyalty is for

Best for: stores under 2,000 monthly orders that want points, referrals, store credit and VIP tiers on one bill, and especially stores already running Appstle Subscriptions. Tiers at $30 change what a small store can afford to run — most loyalty programmes that fail do so because the merchant could only afford a flat points scheme, and flat points give a thousand-dollar customer the same status as a fifty-dollar one.

Not ideal for: headless storefronts, stores above 5,000 monthly orders, and any finance team that needs a published price for the plan they will be on in twelve months. If your roadmap includes Hydrogen or a custom front end, loyalty state has to come from an API, and here that API is a sales conversation rather than a plan feature.

Why the tier price matters more than it looks

Loyalty spend is justified by retention economics, not by engagement. Harvard Business Review's summary of the research puts acquiring a new customer at five to 25 times the cost of keeping one and cites Frederick Reichheld's finding at Bain & Company that lifting retention 5% raises profit between 25% and 95%.

Tiers are the mechanism that connects a loyalty programme to that arithmetic, because they are the only common loyalty feature that treats customers differently by value. A points-only programme rewards the thousandth dollar exactly like the first. A tiered programme gives your top decile a reason to stay in it. When tiers sit behind a $199 plan, a store doing 400 orders a month will not buy them, and will run the version of loyalty that does not move retention. At $30 that calculation changes, and that is the real story of this app.

What it actually does

Points, referrals and store credit on the free plan. Appstle Loyalty's free tier carries the points engine, earning and reward rules, a loyalty page, store credit, the referral program, milestone emails, analytics with data export, and live support — capped at 250 monthly orders. Smile.io's free plan stops at 200 orders and excludes the dedicated loyalty page.

VIP tiers on the $30 plan. Appstle Loyalty puts tiers, custom point expiration, free-product redemption, bulk point automations and custom email HTML on Business at $30 a month. Smile.io gates VIP tiers and point expiry to Growth at $199. Joy puts tiers on Advanced at $129.

Appstle Loyalty's live listing, 7 October 2026: 5.0 stars from 1,418 reviews, Built for Shopify, launched February 2023.

Checkout redemption on $100, Shopify Plus only. Business Premium adds points redemption inside checkout, which Shopify restricts to Plus stores through checkout UI extensions. Smile.io also reserves checkout redemption for Growth plus Plus. If you are not on Plus, this line is unavailable to you at any price, from anyone.

POS earn and redeem on the $10 plan. Starter includes Shopify POS earning and redemption and what the listing calls omnichannel loyalty management. For a store with one physical location, $10 a month for in-store points is the cheapest route to it on the App Store.

Named integrations: Checkout, customer accounts, Shopify POS, Shopify Flow, Shopify Admin, Judge.me, Appstle Subscriptions, Klaviyo, Omnisend, Loox, Stamped, Mailchimp, Recharge, Recurpay, Seal and Bold.

Appstle Loyalty also carries the Built for Shopify badge, which sets a baseline on performance, embedded admin experience and app-store standards.

What to check before you commit

The order caps are the pricing model, not a footnote. Free stops at 250 monthly orders, Starter at 500, Business at 2,000, Business Premium at 5,000. The listing says "no extra charges" on the first three, which is unusual and genuinely good: a store that crosses its cap does not get an overage invoice, it gets asked to upgrade. Business Premium then charges $0.015 per order above 5,000.

That $0.015 is worth sitting with. Smile.io's Growth plan charges $20 per additional 100 orders above 2,500, which is $0.20 an order. Joy's Advanced charges $10 per 100, which is $0.10. Appstle's overage is roughly 13 times cheaper than Smile's and about 7 times cheaper than Joy's.

Above 5,000 orders there is no published price. The listing ends with two instructions to contact the vendor: one for Hydrogen, APIs and webhooks, one for enterprise and unlimited plans. If you are forecasting past 5,000 monthly orders, or your developers need the API, you are negotiating rather than buying off a page. Every vendor at this size does some version of this; Appstle is unusual only in how low the published ceiling sits.

Annual billing saves 20% on all three paid tiers: $96, $288 and $960 a year against $120, $360 and $1,200 monthly. The trial is 14 days.

The rating is near-perfect and should be read carefully. The review sample breaks down as roughly 97% five-star, with 6 one-star reviews out of 1,147 in the third-party sample. A distribution that tight on a base that large is either an exceptionally good product or an exceptionally well-run review prompt, and from outside you cannot tell which. Read the one-star reviews before you decide; there are only six and it takes two minutes.

Where it loses

Headless. No plan includes API or webhook access. If your storefront is Hydrogen, Next.js or anything other than a Liquid theme, loyalty state has to come from somewhere, and here it comes from a conversation with sales. Joy publishes a developer toolkit and JS SDK on its $499 Ultimate plan; LoyaltyLion sells unlimited integrations from its $199 Classic plan. Neither is cheap; both are priced.

Review depth against the incumbents. 1,418 reviews is strong for an app launched in February 2023, and it is less than a third of Smile.io's 4,619. If your evaluation weighs years of public feedback, Appstle Loyalty has fewer years to weigh.

Smile.io, read the same day: 4.9 from 4,619 reviews, and VIP tiers only on the $199 Growth plan.

One vendor, two bills. Appstle Loyalty and Appstle Subscriptions are separate apps with separate install bases, separate plans and separate charges. Running both at Business level is $30 plus whatever the subscription plan costs. The integration is real; the invoice is not consolidated.

Prices and ratings read off the live Shopify App Store listings on 7 October 2026.

LoyaltyLion's free plan allows the most orders of the four at 400, and then its ladder jumps straight to $199 — and that $199 plan's own description asks stores doing more than 500 orders a month to request a custom quote. A store at 450 monthly orders pays nothing; a store at 550 cannot price itself from the listing at all.

LoyaltyLion, 7 October 2026: 4.6 from 544 reviews — the lowest rating of the four — and a ladder that jumps from free to $199.

Is Appstle Loyalty worth it?

For a store under 2,000 monthly orders that wants tiers, $30 a month is the best price in the category by a wide margin, and the free plan is a real programme rather than a trial. For a store planning past 5,000 orders or running a headless storefront, the published ladder runs out before your roadmap does — which is a reason to price the alternatives now rather than after a migration.

If you are weighing it against the incumbent, the same breakdown exists for Smile.io alternatives and LoyaltyLion alternatives. For the mechanics underneath the feature lists, how VIP tiers should be structured and what a loyalty point actually costs change buying decisions more than any feature table.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Appstle Loyalty cost? Free up to 250 monthly orders, then $10 a month to 500 orders, $30 to 2,000 orders and $100 to 5,000 orders, with $0.015 per order above that. Annual billing takes 20% off. Prices read off the live listing on 7 October 2026.

Is Appstle Loyalty the same as Appstle Subscriptions? No. They are separate apps from the same vendor, with separate installs, plans and charges. They integrate with each other.

Does Appstle Loyalty work with Shopify POS? Yes, from the $10 Starter plan, which includes earning and redeeming points in store.

Does Appstle Loyalty have an API? Not on any published plan. The listing asks merchants to contact the vendor for Hydrogen, APIs and webhooks.

How does Appstle Loyalty compare to Smile.io? Smile.io has more than twice the installs and more than three times the reviews. Appstle Loyalty is dramatically cheaper for VIP tiers — $30 against $199 — and for overage above the top published cap. Smile.io has the longer public track record; Appstle Loyalty has the better price for the feature most stores want second.
